HTTPS is a lightweight ranking signal

What is HTTPS?

HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol and is the set of rules used to transfer data from one machine to another across the internet. HTTPS is the secure version of the HTTP.

SSL encrypts information sent between your website and a visitor’s web browser so that it cannot be read as it is sent across the internet.

Most web browsers display a padlock when you’re viewing a site over SSL, so you know the connection is secure. The address bar will look like this https://www

Migrating to HTTPS

In order to use HTTPS, you will first need to obtain an SSL certificate. There are different types of SSL certificate and we can help you choose which is right for your website.

Generally, if you are not taking card payments directly on your website, you will be fine with the DV SSL which you can order on this page.

Issues with migrating to HTTPS

Migrating from HTTP to HTTPS is comparable to a site move and can be a complex procedure.

Doing so will involve the following:

  • Ensuring your server supports HTTPS
  • Installing the SSL certificate on your server. (Part of our SETUP service)
  • Redirecting URLs on your site to your HTTPS address (You will most likely have to edit some of the URLs in your website files, otherwise your site will be flagged as serving mixed (secure and non-secure) content – we can provide a quote if you are unable to do this yourself)
  • Updating your Google Search Console (Google Webmaster Tools), Google Shopping, Analytics and Adwords so that they continue to operate on your site’s new address.
  • Updating your Content Delivery Network URLs if used
